Photo: East Primary, District No. 10, Lacona

The East Primary, District No. 10, Lacona, was one of the forerunners of Union Free School District 9. The photo was taken by Fed Laird of Lacona. It shows part of the East Primary Schoolhouse at the intersection of the Orwell and South Ridge Roads. (Co. Rts. 22 and 48) Fred identified every pupil and the teacher (in back) Mildred Williams who married Milton Sanford of the South Landing, Town of Ellisburg.

This photo was taken during the winter of 1913-1914. The first and second grades included: first row left to right: Doris Ackerman (Nichols), Doris Bettinger (Taplin), Munson Tuner, Fred Laird, Leo Remington and Earl Knight; second row: Violet Laird Tichner, Doris Hilton (Button), Rita Smith, Donald Witsaman, Robert Patterson and “Red” Miles. The school shown here was built near the site of the first schoolhouse sometime between 1854 and 1861. The Oswego County map published in the former year shows the District 10 common school on the original site a few rods northeast of this one, facing on the Orwell Road.
The earliest known school building in the whole town was built of logs on that first site, as early as 1807. It had grown from a school held during the winter of 1806-1807 in the home of pioneer George Harding with his daughter Mamrie Harding as the teacher. Memories of the schoolhouse pictured here, with its wide door casings, small pane double windows and random width clapboarding are recorded in the Centennial History of Sandy Creek. The late Smith H. Barlow was for several years the efficient teacher of this school and he was remembered by the surviving scholars as a wonderful disciplinarian.
