From the Archives: July 19, 1894:

The citizen’s of Lacona have completed arrangements with the New York Central, whereby the plot of land lying between the station and Railroad Street is to be converted into a flower garden. “This included the sites of the Nellis Diner and Lacona Gas and Supply office, and among the flowers at one time were small stones painted white, which were grouped to spell out “Lacona” on a bed of ground tilted so that railroad passengers could read it from the cars.”

We continue to research the businesses in Lacona and welcome pictures and or business histories. (In the future we will include Sandy Creek and Sandy Pond and are collecting that information now) Send the information in or better yet stop by the History Center Open House on Saturday, October 19 from 10 am to 2 pm. We are at the Sandy Creek Town Hall on the first floor so park in back and come for a visit to see what we do. We will have a “family tree” program for children that day also.
