I am looking for memories of your school years to add to the Town of Sandy Creek One Room Schools local history book.  In honor of  President’s Day (February 15) we celebrate the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, a little trivia…Did you know? There have been forty-four people sworn into office, and forty-five presidencies, due to the fact that Grover Cleveland served two non-consecutive terms and is counted chronologically as both the twenty-second and the twenty-fourth president. Of the individuals elected as president, four died in office of natural causes (William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, Warren G. Harding, and Franklin D. Roosevelt), one resigned (Richard Nixon),and four were assassinated (Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield, William McKinley, and John F. Kennedy).

The first president was George Washington, who was inaugurated in 1789 after a unanimous Electoral College vote. William Henry Harrison spent the shortest time in office at 31 days in 1841. At over twelve years, Franklin D. Roosevelt spent the longest time in office, and is the only president to serve more than two terms; he died shortly into his fourth term in 1945. These eleven President’s served as generals from the Revolutionary War through World War II: George Washington, Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, and Dwight D. Eisenhower.  While researching my columns, books and family histories I sometimes run across interesting tid-bits, so because February is Black History Month I submit this find: The Brown House/Woodruff Homestead, on Center Road, just west of the Snyder Road was built in 1837. There is a very old central fireplace in the oldest part of the house which probably dates from the 1820’s. The front part of the house was built by Elisha Woodruff. According to oral tradition, his family helped some black Americans to secure their freedom by going south to purchase young slaves, then setting them free in New York State after they had worked off their purchase price.
