This photo shows the Whippet Tank that visited the area in 1919. The May 15, 1919 Sandy Creek Newspaper had this account, “Last Friday promptly on schedule the whippet tank under command of Lieutenant Hazard reached Sandy Creek from Adams and that afternoon climbed the heaps of logs in Postmaster Wilcox’s mill yard cut down a maple tree ten inches in diameter and did various stunts. In Sandy Creek it butted its way through the cellars of the burnt district fronting Main Street. (California Block) Here, surrounded by a crowd, the final stand in the Victory Loan was made. At the close of Saturday the local banking district had subscribed $86,000 the percentage being 145% or nearly one and a half times the allotment.”

“Our people were deeply interested in the feats of the tank, which remained here till late Saturday afternoon to make needed repairs. Then the outfit went south. The tank was loaded on a five-ton truck.”

“While showing off the little machine would jump about 15 yards, then suddenly stop and spin around on its own axis. Then it would take another jump to the side and repeat the spin. No one could tell which way it would turn next. These maneuvers went through in an attack to prevent the enemy’s gun from getting their range.”

“The tank was piloted by Lieutenant D. B. Baxter, an instructor in the tank corps at Camp Colt. During its travels it was driven by Private Meacham. There were six men here with the tank, three officers and three enlisted men. The officers were: Lieutenant Frederick R. Hazard and Lieutenant H. W. McGraw of the field artillery and Lieutenant D. B. Baxter of the tank corps. The enlisted men are: Sergeant R. W. Dasher and Private W. J. Meacham of the tank corps and Sergeant T. E. McNaly of the motor transportation corps.”
