Photo: Construction of Rt. 81- 1960

This great photograph showing Harwood Drive during the construction of Rt. 81, beginning on the left shows Summerville Funeral Home, the VanRy family home, the Rt. 81 ramp, going north and south and in the middle of the picture is the United Methodist Church. The opposite side of the road is where the Allen Opera House was located, originally built in 1831 as the Methodist Episcopal Church, it also served as the home for the Grange until March 21,1960 when it was taken down to make way for the construction of Interstate Route 81.

The Veterans 1960-current book is being edited and the finalized. We have found 306 Veterans and hope we have contacted everyone who wants to be in the book. The book goes to print October 25th and will be available at the VFW in Lacona on Sunday, November 10th when we honor these veterans and all who served our country to keep us free.
