Photo:1957 Wedding at the Sandy Creek Fair

Ken Sweet from Phoenix came to the fair and asked if we knew about the couple that was married at the Oswego County Fair in August 1957. We were able to find the newspaper clipping with picture printed in the Sandy Creek News and Half-Shire shared a copy of the unidentified wedding picture which we were able to identify through the newspaper.

1957 Fair Book: The Chairman of the event was Mrs. Betty McConnell: “Any worthy couple under 30 years of age who have not been married before, and want to be married at the Centennial Fair, may apply to the chairman before July 31. The couple selected will be dressed in the styles of 100 years ago; the bride’s gown and the suit for the groom will be furnished by the fair. The couple married in this ceremony will receive $100 in cash from the fair; other prizes may be donated by merchants of the county.”

Sandy Creek News: August 22, 1957: Wedding Scheduled: A young couple, identified being kept secret by Fair Officials prior to the ceremony, is scheduled to be married in front of the grandstand Thursday evening. The brides’ gown will be patterned after a style appropriate to the period when the first fair was held, and there will be a complete wedding party numbering about 16, it is reported.

Miss Alice Palmer is Bride at the Fair: A very large crowd was in the grandstand Thursday evening for the wedding ceremony in which Miss Alice Palmer, daughter of Mrs. Ethel Palmer, Caughdenoy, and Robert Green, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Green, also of Caughdenoy, were married. The Rev. Kendall Scouten, pastor of Sandy Creek Methodist Church, officiated at the service which was one of simple dignity and good taste throughout. Other activities on the fairgrounds were suspended and the sound of the midway cut off during the ceremony.

The stage was decorated with gladiolus in tall floor baskets and candelabra. Mrs. Don Russell, sister of the groom, was the matron of honor and James Doria was best man, Max Elsberry of Trinity Episcopal Church, Watertown was organist and William O. Morris of Lacona was soloist. The double ring ceremony was used. Old Fashioned Gown: The bride wore a gown made after the fashion of a hundred years ago. This was furnished by the Fair Association which also gave the couple $100.

The gown was described for the audience by Donna Dale, bridal consultant of Dey Brothers. Flowers and candelabra were furnished by Babcock Florists of Pulaski. Merchants of this and other communities donated many gifts for the couple. Driven in Carriages: In keeping with the theme of the centennial, the members of the wedding party were driven to the stage in horse-drawn carriages; the bride in an1860 carriage driven by Ray Stevens of Lacona.
